Fifth-year assistant coach was one of 31 selected nationwide to participate in event at NCAA Final Four
HOUSTON – University of Houston Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Kellen Sampson was selected to participate in the 2019 Collegiate Coaching Consortium Cohort during the NCAA Final Four in Minneapolis in April.
Sampson was one of only 31 coaches selected from across the nation to participate in the prestigious event. The Consortium is a collaboration between AthleticDirectorU, the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Center for Sports Leadership.
In five years with the Cougars, Sampson has helped lead Houston to 110 victories, four consecutive 20-win seasons and four postseason appearances, including a 2018 NCAA Tournament Second-Round berth following the program's first NCAA Tournament win in more than three decades.
Houston has finished among the American Athletic Conference Top-Three leaders in each of the last four years.
This season, Sampson has guided Houston to a 27-2 record with a 14-2 mark in league play and Top-10 rankings in both national polls. The Cougars have established themselves one of the nation's elite defensive teams and are tied for the lead in The American standings entering the final week of the regular season.
Prior to joining Houston, Sampson served as an assistant coach at Appalachian State (2011-14) and Stephen F. Austin (2010-11).
His 2013-13 Appalachian State team advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament Semifinals, while his 2010-11 SFA squad posted a 13-3 record at home and led the nation in scoring defense with only 56.7 points per game.
