Houston Drops Doubleheader at Memphis

Cougars, Tigers close series Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell to Memphis, 7-3 and 6-4, in a doubleheader on Friday at FedExPark.
With the decisions, the Cougars move to 13-13 on the season and 1-4 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Tigers improve to 13-12 overall and 3-2 in league action.
MEMPHIS 7, HOUSTON 1
KEY INNINGS
1st | Memphis scored three runs in the bottom of the first.
5th | The Tigers added four runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead.
6th | Junior third baseman Jared Triolo got Houston on the board with a solo home run in the sixth.
8th | Freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry added a two-run home run in the eighth for the 7-3 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo and Cherry each homered in the loss. Triolo's solo home run highlighted a 2-for-4 effort, while Cherry's two-run dinger came in a 1-for-4 showing.
• Freshman second baseman Brad Burckel finished 2-for-3 with a pair of singles up the middle.
• Senior first baseman Joe Davis and senior right fielder Grayson Padgett each hit singled, respectively. Padgett added a run scored, coming home on Cherry's home run.
Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-4) suffered the loss. He allowed seven runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking two and tying his career high with eight strikeouts across four and one-third innings.
• Junior Devon Roedahl logged the final three and two-third innings, limiting Memphis to just one hit and striking out three.

MEMPHIS 6, HOUSTON 4
KEY INNINGS
1st | Memphis hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first.
3rd | Davis pulled the Cougars within one run with a three-run home run in the third. With one out, Padgett and Triolo each singled before Davis cleared the bases with a no-doubter to dead center.
6th | Junior shortstop Kobe Hyland tied the game with a solo homer to right field in the sixth.
8th | The Tigers broke the tie with a two-run home run in the eighth for the 6-4 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Hyland finished 2-for-4 with a double and home run.
• Lockhart Jr. and Triolo also doubled in two-hit efforts. Triolo added a run scored.
• Davis hit a three-run home run in a 1-for-4 showing.
• Padgett was 1-for-2.
• Junior left fielder Tyler Bielamowicz, who entered into the game in seventh, and senior pinch hitter Rey Fuentes III each singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
Pitching:
• Junior Fred Villarreal (2-1) took the loss, surrendering a two-run home run in the eighth in two innings of relief. He walked one and struck out two.
• Senior Ryan Randel took a no-decision. He issued four runs on six hits across five and two-third innings. After surrendering a double to his first batter faced in the bottom of the second, Randel retired the next 14 Tigers into the fifth inning.
• Senior Nolan Bond took over for Randel with runners at the corners in the sixth and got a flyout on his second pitch to end the inning in his lone batter faced.

ON DECK
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, Houston and Memphis played a Friday doubleheader. As a result, both teams will enjoy a day off before closing the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
