
Houston's Offense Surges in 16-1 Run-Rule at SFA

Joe Davis hits two multi-run home runs; Grayson Padgett goes 4-for-4
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The University of Houston Baseball team run-ruled Stephen F. Austin, 16-1, in seven innings on Wednesday afternoon at Jaycees Field.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 13-11 on the season, while the Lumberjacks move to 13-13.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston set the tone early with three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior left fielder Grayson Padgett opened the game with a single up the middle. After Padgett advanced to second on a passed ball, junior third baseman Jared Triolo plated him with a double down the left-field line, and senior first baseman Joe Davis homered to left field in the third at-bat of the game. In the bottom frame, SFA scored on a sac fly.
2nd | The Cougars tacked on three runs with two outs in the top of the second. Padgett singled in the infield and stole second base before Triolo reached on a walk. For his second straight plate appearance, Davis cleared the bases with a home run to left field to make it 6-1.
3rd | Houston added four runs in the third. With one out, junior shortstop Kobe Hyland and freshman center fielder Johnathon Thomas walked and sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Padgett scored Hyland and Thomas with a single into the right center-gap, and after a fielding error allowed Lovelace to score, Davis brought home Padgett with a single up the middle to make it 10-1.
4th | The Cougars had another four-run frame in the fourth. With one out, Hyland singled to right field. Two batters later, freshman second baseman Brad Burckel doubled to right to put two in scoring position. Lovelace delivered the pair with a single through the left side of the infield. Padgett plated Lovelace with a double to right center and scored on single from Triolo in the next at-bat to make it 14-1
5th | After Cougars Derrick Cherry and Blake Way singled and doubled to open the fifth, Houston traded consecutive groundouts to score the pair for the 16-1 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis went 4-for-5 with two multi-run home runs, six RBI and two runs scored. The four hits and six RBI each tied career highs, while the multi-homer performance is the first for Houston since Davis hit two at UConn on May 11, 2018.
• Padgett went 4-for-4 with a double, three RBI and four runs scored. The four hits and four runs scored were career highs.
• Triolo and Lovelace each turned in 2-for-4 efforts with two RBI and two runs scored. Triolo added one double and one walk, while Lovelace's two RBI and two runs scored were career highs.
• Cougars Burckel, Cherry, Hyland, Lael Lockhart Jr. and Way all hit safely. Burckel and Way each doubled, respectively.
• Houston recorded a season-high 16 runs, the most since an 18-7 victory over Tulane on May 24, 2018, in the American Athletic Conference Championship in Clearwater, Fla.
• The Cougars recorded a season-high 17 hits, the most since a 17 effort against UNC on June 3, 2018, in the Chappell Hill Regional in North Carolina.
Pitching:
• Sophomore southpaw Jared Pettitte (1-0) earned his first career win in one inning and two-thirds in the start in a Johnny Wholestaff effort.
• Junior Carter Henry recorded the final out of the second inning.
• Junior Tyler Bielamowicz retired all seven batters face in two and one-third scoreless innings.
• Sophomore Ron Brown was called on for the final two outs of the fifth.
• Sophomore Spencer Hynes logged two scoreless frames to seal the run-rule after seven innings.
ON DECK
Houston continues its five-game road swing and returns to American Athletic Conference play with a three-game series at Memphis starting Friday.
PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
