Houston Falls to Wichita State in Conference Opener

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Houston Softball team dropped its American Athletic Conference opener on Friday night, falling to Wichita State by a score of 13-5.

Heading into the second game of the three-game series, the Cougars sit at 21-9 on the season and 0-1 in The American, while the Shockers move to 20-9 and 1-0 in conference play.

Senior Sarah Barker went 1-for-2 in the contest with a pair of runs batted in, tallying her triple of the season in the process. Junior infielder Arielle James continued her recent hot streak at the plate, extending her hitting streak to seven games with her double in the fifth inning. Junior outfielder Lindsey Stretch stretched her reached base streak to 20 games in the contests with her walk in the third.

HOUSTON 5, WICHITA STATE 13

KEY INNINGS
2^nd | The Shockers got their offense going early, plating four runs in the second to take an early 4-0 lead in the game.

3^rd | Wichita State continued to flex its muscle at the plate, as five runs from the Shockers in the inning gave them a nine-run advantage.

5^th | Houston never backed down from the challenge, scoring a total of five runs in the inning off three hits. After junior Sarah Queen doubled home Maya Thomas for the Cougars' first run of the game, Queen came around to score herself off a wild pitch. With two runners on and nobody out, senior outfielder Sarah Barker then stepped into the box and cleared the bases with her triple to cut the deficit to the eight runs. Junior infielder Arielle James continued the rally with a double of her own to score Barker and bring the Cougars within seven. The bottom of the inning saw the Shockers respond with a run of their own to push the lead back to eight and seal the 13-5 win.

ON DECK
The Cougars compete in game two of the three-game series against Wichita State on Saturday. First pitch for that contest is slated for 3 p.m.
