MESA, Ariz. – University of Houston senior All-American Leonie Harm used a steady effort through the day to finish the Clover Cup First Round in a tie for second after shooting a 71 at Longbow Golf Club on Friday afternoon.
Harm, who is the reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, drained nine straight pars to start her day before making her first birdie of the day on the par-4 10th hole. Although she endured two bogeys in a 3-hole stretch at Nos. 11-13, the Gerlingen, Germany, native rebounded nicely with birdies on No. 15 and on her final hole of the day to finish at 1-under par.
Kentucky's Leonie Bettel held the first-day lead after shooting a 67. Emma Albrecht (Notre Dame), Aubree Jones (Mississippi State), Jennifer Chang (USC) and Niamh McSherry (Kansas State) were tied for third at 72.
Competing as an individual, freshman Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 11th with a 74, while junior Amanda Elich was the third Cougar among the Top-20 leaders at 75.
Freshman Hannah Screen was tied for 30th at 77, while senior Maddy Rayner was tied for 72nd at 83. Senior Tatiana Pineda was tied for 79th at 85.
As a team, the Cougars were tied for sixth with a score of 306 on the 6,184-yard, par-72 course.
USC held the team lead at 292 to stand six strokes ahead of Kentucky and Mississippi State. Oklahoma (299) and Notre Dame (303) rounded out the Top-Five leaders. The Cougars joined Kansas State in a tie for sixth with Mercer (310), Wisconsin (313) and Nebraska (315) completing the Top 10.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Mercer and Wisconsin, beginning at 10 a.m. (CDT), Saturday.
Pineda will start the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 10 a.m. (CDT) with Rayner (10:10 a.m. CDT), Screen (10:20 a.m. CDT), Elich (10:30 a.m. CDT0 and Harm (10:40 a.m. CDT) following.
UP NEXT
Following the Clover Cup, the Cougars will travel to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Mountainview Collegiate on March 22-24 at the Preserve at Saddle Brooke.
From there, the team will compete in the Bruzzy Challenge at Lantana Golf Club in Dallas on April 1-2.
