Cougars score all eight runs over final three innings
DALLAS -- The University of Houston Baseball team defeated DBU, 8-6, in a late-night affair on Friday at Horner Ballpark.
With the decision, the Cougars pick up their fifth straight victory and improve to 9-7 on the season, while the Patriots fall to 13-4.
KEY INNINGS
3rd | DBU scored two runs in the bottom of the third.
7th | Houston scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Cougars Grayson Padgett (walk), Tyler Bielamowicz (hit by pitch), Brad Burckel (walk) and Jared Triolo (walk, RBI) all drew free passes to get Houston on the board. Senior first baseman Joe Davis scored freshman Johnathon Thomas, who pinch ran for Bielamowicz, with a sacrifice fly to left field, before junior left fielder Blake Way delivered Burckel with a suicide squeeze to take a 3-2 edge. The lead was short lived however, as DBU scored three runs in the bottom frame.
8th | The Cougars scored four unearned runs with two outs the top of the eighth. Burckel went down swinging for what should've been the final out of the frame, but a passed ball allowed him to reach and junior right fielder Wendell Champion II, who led off the inning with a walk, to score. With a runner on first, the Cougars went walk, single, walk, single to score three more runs. Davis recorded a two-RBI single to center field, while junior shortstop Kobe Hyland singled up the middle to make it 7-5. The Patriots scored one run in the bottom frame.
9th | Houston added an insurance run in the ninth. Champion II again led off the frame with a walk. During the next at-bat, he stole second base and moved up to third on a throwing error. Padgett singled home Champion II two batters later for the 8-6 final.
