The Cougars set to open conference play
HOUSTON – The Houston Women's Tennis team plays their first American Athletic match of the year against the Wichita State Shockers at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. Following that match, the Cougars take on Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9. Both matches will be held at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston fell to Southeastern Conference opponent #21 Auburn last Saturday in a 4-1 battle at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. The Cougars dropped the doubles point, 2-0, and played hard fought matches in singles, eventually falling 4-1. Both Sophie Gerits and Phonexay Chitdara were unable to finish their doubles and singles matches when the Tigers clinched the match at Court 1. The Belgian duo is enjoying an undefeated streak in doubles.
Stephanie Belovukovic was the first singles match to step off the court, rolling through Yu Cheng, 6-1, 6-1. The Australian freshman holds a 5-1 streak in singles.
ABOUT THE SHOCKERS
Wichita State comes into Houston on Friday with a 1-3 record, falling to Missouri in their last match. The Shockers played Baylor and #11 Kansas as well. Senior Sandra Honigova leads the team, boasting a 16-5 singles record last season. This season, she carries a 0-3 singles record, while being undefeated in doubles.Â
ABOUT THE LADYJACKS
The Ladyjacks are enjoying a 2-0 record this season, defeating Alcorn State and Jackson State. In their last match, SFA won 5-2 on Sunday. The Ladyjacks' start player, Gabi Guilarte, holds a 1-1 singles record at Flight 1 this season. Guilarte is undefeated in doubles.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will host Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, before traveling to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers at noon on Sunday, Feb 17.
