THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Thanks to three student-athletes among the Top-10 leaders, the University of Houston Women's Golf program captured the ICON Invitational team championship with a score of 872 on Tuesday afternoon at The Woodlands Country Club.
Returning early Tuesday to the 6,392-yard, par-72 Tournament course to complete the Second Round after play was suspended late Monday due to darkness, the 33rd-ranked Cougars finished with a total of 286 in the Second Round and posted a Final-Round score of 289 to win by three strokes over No. 27 Purdue.
No. 9 Kent State (876), No. 20 TCU (877), Texas A&M (883) and No. 18 Clemson (883) rounded out the Top-Six leaders in a field, which featured six of the nation's Top-50 programs.
Individually, freshman Hannah Screen fired a 69 to complete her Second Round on Tuesday and finished fourth with a score of 2-under 214. The Berkhamsted, U.K., native enjoyed her career-best finish, topping a pair of seventh-place showings earlier this season, and earned the third Top-10 finish of her career.
Senior All-American Leonie Harm closed her tournament with back-to-back rounds of 70 to surge into a tie for sixth at even-par 216. The Gerlingen, Germany, native enjoyed her third Top-10 finish in 2018-19 and the 17th of her outstanding career.
After opening the tournament with a 74 on Monday, senior Maddy Rayner lowered her scored with each round, capping the event with a 71 Tuesday to tie for ninth at 218.
Junior Amanda Elich tied for 30th at 224, while freshman Maria Jose Martinez tied for 74th at 237. Competing as individuals, senior Yuka Kajiki tied for 65th at 234 with senior Tatiana Pineda tying for 77th at 239.
Clemson's Alice Hewson earned medalist honors with a score of 9-under 207 to finish three strokes ahead of TCU's Greta Bruner. Pimnipa Panthong of Kent State finished third at 211.
UP NEXT
Following the ICON Invitational, the Cougars head to Mesa, Ariz., to compete in the Clover Cup at the Longbow Golf Club on March 15-17.
From there, Houston competes at the Mountainview Collegiate, hosted by Missouri at The Preserve at Saddlebrooke in Tucson, Ariz., on March 22-24.
