Houston men look to claim fifth straight indoor title
HOUSTON – The Houston Track & Field program heads east this weekend for the American Athletic Conference Championship inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Houston men, looking to win their fifth straight American indoor title, enter the meet as the conference's highest ranked team at No. 4 in the USTFCCCA rankings, while the Houston women enter as the second-highest ranked team at No. 36, just two spots behind the defending conference champion, Cincinnati.
ABOUT THE AMERICAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Houston action at The American Indoor Championships kicks off at 9 a.m., Friday with the 60-meter hurdles of the women's pentathlon. The 60-meter dash, the first of four events of the men's heptathlon on Friday, kicks off at 11 a.m. Individual field events kick off at noon with the men's pole vault, while trials of the running events begin at 12:25 p.m., with the women's mile run.
Saturday's competition begins with the final three events of the men's heptathlon, starting with the 60-meter hurdles at 9 a.m. Action begins in the field with the women's and men's high jump at 9:45 a.m., while the finals for running events are set to kick off at 11:20 a.m. with the women's mile run. Closing out the day will be the men's 4x400-meter relay at 2:50 p.m.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Houston men will look to win their fifth consecutive title and will look to score big in the sprint events.
Amere Lattin will be competing in the 60-meter hurdles looking to defend his 2018 title and stay on top in The American. Freshman Devion Wilson will also being joining in hurdles following behind Lattin with the No. 2 ranking in The American.
Houston owns five of the top seven spots this season in The American in both the 60- and 200-meter dash led by Mario Burke, who ranks fifth nationally in the 60, and Obi Igbokwe, who ranks fourth nationally in the 200. Houston has claimed all five 60-meter titles in The American's existence while claiming the last three 200 titles.
Houston is also expected to score in the 400-meter dash where Kahmari Montgomery will look to defend his 2018 title in the event, and ranked No. 6 nationally, leads a Houston group that owns the conference's top four times of the season. The 400 group will bolster the nation's top-ranked 4x400-meter relay that will look to defend its 2018 crown.
Cameron Laverty will be looking for a title as he has stayed on top of The American's rankingsin the 800-meter run this season and will be joined by freshman Christian Gilmore who owns the No. 4 time in the event.
In the field events, Trumaine Jefferson is eager to claim a title in long jump after winning the event in 2017. Felipe Valencia is looking for a title in shot put after winning the event in 2016 as a freshman.
Nathaniel Mechler will be competing in the heptathlon to try to leap in the rankings from third in The American and defend his titles from 2017 and 2018.
On the women's side, Naomi Taylor will be competing in the 60-meter hurdles to claim a title after being on top in The American this season. In the 60-meter dash, Brianne Bethel will be looking to win it all as she fights to defend her 2018 title. Bethel will also compete in the 200-meter dash to try to claim title in the event she owns the conference's top ranking.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Houston will look for a title after being on top of The American this season. Taylor Scaife is entering the competition as a frontrunner in weight throw after having a stellar season with the third-longest throw in the NCAA.
Competing in long jump, Samiyah Samuels will try to remain in first in The American and defend her 2018 title. Samuels enters the competition No. 13 in the nation in the event.
