Senior center Chris Harris Jr. leads with 12 rebounds and six blocks
HOUSTON – University of Houston sophomore guard Quentin Grimes led all players with 21 points, and senior center Chris Harris Jr. added game highs with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Cougars to a 68-60 win over Texas State on Penick Court inside the Fertitta Center on Wednesday.
Grimes posted the second 20-point game of his career on 6-of-17 shooting from the field with 7-of-7 from the free throw line. The Woodlands, Texas, native added six rebounds with three assists and no turnovers in more than 37 minutes.
While he didn't take a shot from the field, Harris made his impact on the boards and the defensive side. The Houston native posted a career high with 12 rebounds, including seven off the offensive glass. Harris also swatted six blocked shots, which were part of the Cougars' 10 in the game.
Playing at Houston for the first time since the 2013-14 season, Texas State jumped out to a 29-23 lead late in the first half, but the Cougars closed out the opening period with a field goal from junior forward Fabian White Jr. and three free throws from redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills.
The Cougars (4-2) used an 8-4 run to start the second half and take a 36-33 lead on junior guard DeJon Jarreau's 3-pointer, and the two teams went back and forth from there with neither side building more than a 6-point lead.
The Bobcats (6-3) moved to within 58-55 following Eric Terry's free throw with 3:42 left. On the ensuing possession, sophomore guard Nate Hinton's 3-pointer was off the mark, but Harris snared the offensive rebound and found Grimes, who buried a 3-pointer to give Houston a 61-55 lead with just under three minutes remaining.
Texas State closed the game to 61-57, but Hinton buried a jumper and drained a pair of free throws with 32 seconds left to ice the win for Houston.
White finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while Hinton totaled 14 points with eight rebounds and an assist. Jarreau posted 12 points with five rebounds, two assists and three blocks in the win.
Guard Nijal Pearson led the Bobcats before fouling out with 17 points, while guard Mason Harrell added 11 points and four assists. Forward Isiah Small and forward Alonzo Sule led the way with five rebounds apiece.
