
Houston Competes for Title at Diamond Head Classic

Cougars tip off vs. No. 21/20 Washington at 7:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday from Honolulu
HONOLULU – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program closes out its non-conference schedule and looks to do so with a tournament championship when it faces Washington at 7:30 p.m. (CST) Wednesday in the championship game of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Cougars enter the Christmas title game following a 70-59 win over Georgia Tech on Monday. For the second straight game, sophomore guard Quentin Grimes led the Cougars, pouring in a game-high 26 points, including 23 in the first half alone.
Through the first two games of the tournament, The Woodlands, Texas, native is averaging 22.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while hitting 65.4 percent of his shots from the field, including 50 percent from the 3-point line.
Junior forward Fabian White Jr. scored 15 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds against the Yellow Jackets for his first double-double of the season. The Atascocita, Texas, native is averaging 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game at the Diamond Head Classic.
Wednesday's game will be the first time Houston has faced the Huskies since the 2004-05 season.
Houston enters the game as one nation's premier rebounding teams. The Cougars rank second nationally with a 12.2 rebounding margin, are third with 43.4 rebounds per game and rank fourth with 14.9 offensive boards per contest.
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton is the only player rank among the American Athletic Conference's Top-4 leaders in both offensive and defensive rebounds. The Gastonia, N.C., native is tied for third in the league with 2.9 offensive rebounds per game and ranks third with 6.4 defensive rebounds per contest.
PLAYING on CHRISTMAS
Wednesday's game will be only the third time Houston has competed on Christmas Day during the program's history. The Cougars have posted a 2-0 record on that day.
