
Grimes Leads Houston to Diamond Head Classic Title Game

Sophomore guard leads all with 26 points; Fabian White finishes with 12 points, 12 rebounds in win
HONOLULU – University of Houston sophomore guard Quentin Grimes led all players with 26 points, including 23 in the first half, and junior forward Fabian White Jr. added 15 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 70-59 win over Georgia Tech in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Semifinals inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
Grimes connected on 10-of-15 from the field and grabbed five rebounds with an assist. Posting his first double-double of the season but the fourth of his career, White drained 6-of-11 shots and with six offensive and six defensive boards and a pair of assists.
The Cougars jumped ahead early before the Yellow Jackets moved to within 15-13 following Michael Devoe's jumper with 12:14 left in the first half.
However, the Cougars used an 11-1 run over the next four-and-a-half minutes to take a 26-14 following White's jumper in the lane with 7:47 remaining.
In the second half, Georgia Tech moved to within six points on two occasions, but the Cougars responded each time with a run of their own to push the lead back to double digits.
Houston connected on 44.8 percent from the field (26-of-58) while limiting Georgia Tech to only 37.0 percent (20-of-54), including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) in the second half. The Cougars also took advantaged of a 42-25 advantage on the boards in outrebounding their 12th consecutive opponent this season.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 9-3 overall and won for the seventh time in their last eight games.
Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills finished with 12 points and led the Cougars with three assists.
Georgia Tech forward Moses Wright led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Devoe finished with 17 points, while Jordan Usher added 10 points in the loss.
