
Houston Rolls in Diamond Head Classic Opener

Cougars take 81-56 victory over Portland on Sunday as Quentin Grimes leads all with 18 points
HONOLULU – University of Houston sophomore guard Quentin Grimes poured in 18 second-half points to lead the Cougars to an 81-56 win over Portland in Game One of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic inside the Stan Sheriff Center on Sunday afternoon.
After being held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes, The Woodlands, Texas, native connected on 7-of-8 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, to lead the Cougars in scoring for the fourth time this season. Grimes also led all players with six assists and posted a pair of steals.
Houston jumped out to a 21-9 lead in the first 7+ minutes and never trailed in the first meeting against the Pilots since 1984. The Cougars connected on 50 percent of their 60 shots from the field while limiting Portland to only 34.7 percent (17-of-49) and outrebounded the Pilots 40-27.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 8-3 and won for the sixth time in their last seven games. Houston advances to face the winner of Georgia Tech-Boise State in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Semifinals at 6 p.m. (CST) Monday.
Portland dropped its second straight game and fell to 8-5.
Grimes was part of a balanced Houston attack that saw 10 of its 11 players in uniform drain at least one field goal. Senior center Chris Harris Jr. finished with 13 points and added five rebounds, including four offensive, with a game-high three blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton led all players with 10 rebounds and fell just one point shy of another double-double this season.
Portland guard Malcolm Porter – son of head coach and longtime NBA veteran Terry Porter – led the Pilots with 11 points and five rebounds.
