
Houston Opens Diamond Head Classic on Sunday

Cougars take on Portland at 2 p.m. (CST), Sunday, inside Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu
HONOLULU – Winners of five of its last six games, the University of Houston Men's Basketball program closes out its regular-season, non-conference schedule and the year 2019 when it opens play at the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic this weekend.
The Cougars (7-3) open tournament play when they face Portland at 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday, inside the Stan Sheriff Center.
Houston enters the tournament following a 77-57 win over former Conference USA rival UTEP on Thursday night inside the Fertitta Center.
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton led the Cougars with 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season and the sixth of his career. He is one of only three players to rank among the American Athletic Conference leaders in both offensive and defensive rebounding.
Junior forward Brison Gresham finished with 10 points against UTEP and set career highs with 12 rebounds and six blocked shots for the first double-double of his career.
Sophomore guard Quentin Grimes leads the Cougars with 13.9 points per game and ranks 10th in The American with his scoring total. Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills ranks third among the Cougars and 21st in the league with 12.0 points per game after tying with Hinton for game-high honors with 17 points against UTEP.
