
Houston Rallies For Win Over Southern Miss

Tatyana Hill leads charge with career-high 24 points
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team rallied its way back for its fifth win inside the Fertitta Center this season in a 75-60 victory over the Southern Miss Lady Eagles on Thursday morning at the Fertitta Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Eagles came out of the gate swinging, taking an early 6-0 lead over the Cougars in the opening minute of action. Tatyana Hill would score Houston's first points of the game from the free throw line, scoring four early points at the charity stripe and taking advantage of the mismatches inside the paint. After trailing early, Houston would close out the frame with an 8-4 run as both teams exited the first quarter deadlocked at 12 points each.
With both teams tied and 30 minutes left in regulation, both teams battled on both ends of the court in the second quarter. Sharpshooting from the Lady Eagles and defensive miscues from the Cougars would allow Southern Miss to go on a 7-3 scoring run at the midway point of the frame, taking a 30-22 lead before back-to-back three-pointers from Dymond Gladney would turn the tides in favor of the home team. Houston would come within five points and head to the break trailing Southern Miss 35-30.
Houston would find a rhythm on offense and shoot 53.3 percent from the field in the third quarter and outscore Southern Miss 24-13 in the frame. A made free-throw from Julia Blackshell-Fair would tie the game once again with under four minutes to play, scoring 10 of her 17 points in the third quarter. The Cougars would find themselves in the driver's seat at the end of the quarter, leading USM 54-48.
The Cougars kept their foot on the gas, outscoring USM 21-12 in the fourth quarter including 14-4 in the paint. Efficiency and patience would be the winning formula for the Cougars as the squad shot 63.6 percent from the field, led by a 10-point effort from Hill who went 3-of-4 from the field. Defensively, Houston held USM to 30.8 percent shooting from the field and 1-of-5 from long-range. Houston would secure its fifth win in side the Fertitta Center this season and improve to 6-6 on the season with a 75-50 win over Southern Miss.
