Junior forward Brison Gresham leads way with 12 rebounds and six blocks
HOUSTON - HOUSTON – University of Houston junior forward Brison Gresham posted 10 points with a game-high 12 rebounds and swatted six shots for the first double-double of his career during a 77-57 win over UTEP inside the Fertitta Center on Thursday night.
Gresham was a force on both ends of the floor, grabbing six offensive and six defensive boards. The New Orleans native also set a personal best with his blocks total and tied the Fertitta Center record in that category, first set by senior center Chris Harris against Texas State earlier this season.
Houston (7-3) jumped out to a double-digit lead early in the game and eventually took a 37-27 lead into the locker room at the break. The two teams went back and forth in the second half before the Miners moved to within 54-49 when Souley Boum sank a driving layup with 7:50 left in the game.
However, Boum was called for a technical foul for taunting. Sophomore guard Nate Hinton then drained both free throws to start a 16-0 Cougar run that turned into a 70-49 lead following Hinton's 3-pointer with just under four minutes to go.
Hinton finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for his team-leading fifth double-double of the season. It was his third double-double in the Cougars' last four games and the sixth of his career.
Junior guard DeJon Jarreau totaled seven points with four rebounds and a game-high nine assists. Making the first start of his collegiate career, redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills tied with Hinton for team-high honors with 17 points.
UTEP forward Bryson Williams led the Miners with 17 points on 7-of-19 shooting and tied with Efe Odigie for team-high honors with seven rebounds. Boum added 13 points with three rebounds in the loss.
