Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills leads way with career-high 23 points
HOUSTON – University of Houston redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills poured in a career-high 23 points, but it would not be enough as the Cougars dropped a 61-55 decision to Oklahoma State inside the Fertitta Center on Sunday afternoon.
Mills connected on 8-of-18 shots from the field in posting his second 20-point game of the year. He topped his previous high of 21 points at No. 11 Oregon on Nov. 22.
With the loss, the Cougars saw their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 6-3 overall. Oklahoma State ended a two-game losing skid and improved to 7-3.
After shooting only 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from the field in the first half, the Cougars fell behind 35-19 at the halftime break and trailed by as many as 18 points early in the second half before mounting a comeback.
Trailing 50-40 with just under seven minutes remaining in the game, Houston scored the next 10 points and knotted the game at 50-50 when Mills drained his second of two free throws with 3:40 left.
The Cowboys regained the lead on a pair of free throws from Yor Anei on the ensuing possession. After Mills was fouled, the Arden, N.C, native drained 1-of-2 free throws to move the Cougars to within 52-51 with 2:57 left.
On the ensuing possession and with the shot clock winding down, OSU's Lindy Waters III sank a 3-pointer for a 55-51 OSU lead with 2:28 to go.
Mills' jumper with 1:54 moved cut the deficit in half, but Oklahoma State scored the next four points to take control of the game.
Sophomore guard Nate Hinton added 11 points with a team-high nine rebounds to lead Houston.
Anei led Oklahoma State with 18 points and added eight rebounds. Forward Cameron McGriff totaled 12 points with a game-high 10 rebounds, while Waters and fellow guard Thomas Dziagwa recorded 11 points apiece.
