Freshman collects first monthly honor of collegiate career following record-setting October
HOUSTON – After posting a pair of Top-10 finishes and recently leading the Cougars to a second-place team showing, University of Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard was honored Tuesday as the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for October.
In two tournaments, Fredgaard posted five sub-par rounds, including four in the 60s, with three 68s.
Fredgaard opened the month with a score of 5-under 211 to tie for ninth at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Club in San Marcos, Texas, on Oct. 20. The Asserbo, Denmark, native started that tournament with a 71 and tied her career-low with a 68 in the Second Round.
From there, she led the Cougars in her second straight tournament at their own White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas, on Oct. 28-30.
Fredgaard fired three straight rounds in the 60s with 68s in the First and Final Rounds to finish second at 11-under 205. With her 54-hole total, she set a Houston record, topping the previous low of 207 by Leonie Harm at the MountainView Collegiate on March 10-12, 2017.
Competing in a field against 10 of the nation's Top-50 program and five of the Top 25, the Cougars closed out their fall season with a fourth-place finish at the White Sands Invitational.
Fredgaard collected the first monthly honor of her collegiate career.
Memphis' Isaiah Jackson and USF's Luke Gifford shared Men's Golfer of the Month honors.
