HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston came out with intensity, taking an early lead in the opening minutes off of forced turnovers. Three-point shooting would be a catalyst for Houston as both Dorian Branch and Dymond Gladney got going from behind-the-arc early. Houston was blistering hot from long-range, hitting 6-of-6 from three-point range in the first 10 minutes of play.
The Cougars kept pressuring the Syracuse offense in the second frame, forcing six turnovers and scoring 10 points off of those turnovers. Houston continued to push the ball down low scoring 10 of its 16 second quarter points inside the paint, as the Cougar bench outscored the Syracuse reserves 12-5. Houston would enter the break shooting 50 percent from long-range, 39.5 percent from the field and trailing the Orange 39-45.
Syracuse managed to get going offensively in the third frame, outscoring Houston 16-6 before the first media timeout of the quarter. A bucket at the buzzer from Bria Patterson along with a field-goal in the opening minutes of the quarter kept the Cougars within striking distance as Houston headed into the final 10 minutes of regulation trailing, 53-68.
The fourth quarter proved to be a battle for Houston as the Cougars struggled to gain an edge offensively, shooting 20 percent from the field. Branch, Gladney and Maya Jones each found scoring opportunities and combined for all ten of the Cougars points in the final minutes of play.
