Blackshell-Fair’s Career Day Leads Cougars to Big Win

Cougars advance to Consolation Championship against San Francisco
VICTORIA. B.C. – The University of Houston Women's Basketball team dominated in the paint and on the glass in a 96-75 win over Cal Baptist at the Greater Victoria Invitational.
Houston will advance to the Consolation Championship against San Francisco on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. CT.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston jumped out with intensity in the opening minutes of the game, taking advantage of its height advantage and hammering the Lancers in the paint. Julia Blackshell-Fair and Tatyana Hill played with a purpose, combining for 21 of the Cougars 26 first quarter points. The Houston defense scored 11 points off of turnovers in the first 10 minutes and dominated the glass, scoring 20 of its 26 points in the post to set the tone early.
The Cougars would counter the sharpshooting of the Lancers by continuing to play in the paint. Cal Baptist hit five three-pointers in the second quarter to keep things close as Houston shot 58 percent from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Before the halftime break, Blackshell-Fair and Hill would combine for 32 points and Houston would outscore CBU 20-8 in the paint.
With a 51-41 lead in hand, the Cougars continued to play Houston Basketball down the stretch. The Cougars shot 9-of-14 from the field in the third frame as Maya Jones, KeAjsa Peace and Dymond Gladney made pivotal plays on offense. The Houston reserves served as a spark on both ends for UH accounting for 14 points, as the squad headed to the fourth quarter leading CBU, 79-64.
With ten minutes remaining in regulation UH kept its foot on the gas. Houston would find a rhythm from behind-the-arc as Branch and Peace accounted for the Cougars two three-pointers of the frame. The Cougars held Cal Baptist to 31 percent shooting from the field and 1-of-6 from long range in the final 10 minutes of action, ultimately securing its highest point total of the season and securing a 96-75 victory.
