Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills leads way with career-high 21 points
EUGENE, Ore. – University of Houston redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills scored a career-high 21 points in a 78-66 loss to No. 11/11 Oregon inside Matthew Knight Arena on Friday night.
Making their first trip to Eugene, Ore., the Cougars (2-2) used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to take a 22-14 lead on sophomore guard Quentin Grimes' jumped with 5:22 left.
Unfortunately, the Ducks closed out the opening period on an 18-5 run for a lead they would never surrender.
Houston continued to chip away at the lead and moved to within 47-41 following junior forward Brison Gresham's layup. However, Oregon scored 13 of the game's next 15 points to take control.
Competing in only his third collegiate game, Mills connected on 8-of-15 shots and grabbed four rebounds with an assist. Junior forward Fabian White Jr. added 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while Gresham led the Cougars with eight rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Oregon guard Anthony Mathis led the Ducks with 18 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the 3-point line. Guard Payton Pritchard finished with 16 points and a game-high five assists, , while forward Francis Okoro totaled 12 points with four rebounds. Will Richardson came off the bench to post 11 points with three rebounds and a pair of assists.
BIG PICTURE
Houston: After winning the previous two meetings with Oregon, the Cougars lost in their first trip to Eugene.
Oregon: The Ducks are 5-0 for the first time since the 2015-16 season, when they reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. But the Ducks have yet to play a game outside the state of Oregon.
UP NEXT
• Following Friday's game, the Cougars return to the friendly confines of the Fertitta Center to play host to Houston Baptist at 7 p.m., Tuesday.
