Freshman guard Caleb Mills leads Cougars with 17 points
HOUSTON – University of Houston freshman guard Caleb Mills came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points, but it would not be quite enough as BYU escaped with a 72-71 win inside the Fertitta Center on Friday night.
TJ Haws' running jumper bounced up off the front of the rim and went in as time expired to lift BYU to the victory.
Houston (1-1) trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half but rallied late to take the lead. Trailing 70-67 following BYU guard Jake Toolson's 3-pointer with 2:16 remaining, the Cougars moved to within a point on Mills' jumper in the paint.
On the ensuing possession, Haws was fouled but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Mills was fouled on a jumper with 1:25 and calmly sank both free throws to give the Cougars a 71-70 lead.
After the two teams traded scoreless possessions, Houston sophomore guard Nate Hinton stripped the ball from Toolson but was whistled for a turnover while trying to recover the loose ball.
Following a BYU timeout, Haws raced up the court and down the right side of the lane before unleashing his shot that went in at the buzzer.
Junior forward Fabian White Jr. finished with 14 points and five rebounds, while junior guard DeJon Jarreau and sophomore guard Quentin Grimes chipped in with 10 points apiece. Hinton led Houston with seven rebounds, while five players posted two assists each.
BYU guard Alex Barcello led his team with 16 points in 6-of-12 shooting, while Tolson and forward Kolby Lee posted 14 points apiece. Haws added 10 points with a game-high five assists.
