Houston Set to Host White Sands Invitational

Cougars cap fall season at Ocean Club in Bahamas beginning Friday morning
NASSAU, Bahamas – The University of Houston Men's Golf tournament caps its 2019 fall season in the beautiful Bahamas when it tees off in the First Round of the White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club on Friday morning.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7 a.m. (CDT) Friday with shotgun starts each day through Sunday on the 7,209-yard, par-71 course.
This is the end of a busy week for Houston Golf in the Bahamas. Houston Women's Golf hosted its own White Sands Invitational on Monday through Wednesday at the Ocean Club.
No. 3 Texas captured the team title with a score of 828, while the 24th-ranked Cougars finished fourth at 866. Texas' Sophie Guo earned medalist honors at 17-under 199 with Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard finishing second with a school-record-low 11-under 205.

TEAM FIELD
The Cougars – who stand at No. 39 in the latest Golfstat national rankings – will compete against #1 Wake Forest, #2 SMU, #22 Arkansas, #46 UAB, Florida State Middle Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Georgia Southern, Miami (Ohio), Illinois State, Wisconsin, Georgia State and Northern Illinois
THE LINEUP
The Cougars will be represented by junior Luke Long, senior Logan Young, junior Alexander Frances, senior George Gardner and junior Andrew Gibson.
Senior Matt Cole and sophomore Braxton Watkins will compete as individuals.
This season, Young leads the Cougars with a 71.22 scoring average and is tied with Long and Frances for the team with lead with rounds of par or better. The Normangee, Texas, native has earned Top-17 finishes in each of the first three tournaments to open the fall.
Long is a close second with a 71.33 average and has posted three straight Top-18 showings of his own.
PAIRINGS
For Friday's First Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Wake Forest and Arkansas.
Long starts the day at 7 a.m., Friday, off No. 1, with Frances (first group off No. 2), Young (second group off No. 2), Gardner (No. 3) and Gibson (No. 4) following. Cole begins off No. 17, while Watkins will start off No. 18.

Following the White Sands Invitational, the Cougars will take a break from competition before opening the spring season at their own All-American Intercollegiate at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas, on Feb. 16-18.
It will be the first of four tournaments, which the Cougars host, including the Border Olympics (Feb. 24-25), Cabo Collegiate (March 1-3) and Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 16-17).
