Ranked No. 17 in the USA TODAY Coaches' Poll and at No. 21 in the most recent Associated Press poll, the Cougars enter this weekend's game with a 17-1 record and 4-1 mark in conference play. Houston claimed a 69-58 win over SMU on Wednesday night in Dallas.
With that victory, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson recorded the 600th win of his near 30-year career and the 100th win during his Houston tenure. He became the 52nd coach in NCAA history (with 10 years at NCAA Division I level) to reach that milestone and became the fastest Houston coach in program history to reach 100 wins, accomplishing the feat in 149 games.
MILESTONES
Sampson was not the only Cougar approaching historic milestones this week.
Senior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. needs only six assists to become the sixth player in school history to dish out 500+ assists during his career.
With one more assist, Robinson will join Derrick Daniels as the only players in school history to record four 100+ assist seasons during their careers. With nine assists, Robinson will move into sole possession of fourth place on the career assists chart in Houston history.
In Wednesday's win at SMU, Robinson made the 100th start of his career, becoming only the eighth Cougar in school history to reach that total.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Houston continues to rank among the nation's premier defensive teams, standing among the Top 10 in three categories. The Cougars rank second nationally in opponents' field goal percentage (36.6), third in opponents 3-point field goal percentage (26.8) and eighth in scoring defense (60.5 ppg).
This season, senior guard Corey Davis leads Houston with 15.7 points per game, while junior guard Armoni Brooks stands second with 14.2 points per game but averages a team-best 6.7 rebounds per contest.
Davis has scored 20 points in each of the last two games against SMU and Wichita State to help move the Cougars into a tie with Cincinnati and Temple for first in the latest American standings.
