Desiree Bowen's overtime goal keeps Houston spotless at home
HOUSTON – A golden goal in the 98th minute from Desiree Bowen lifted Houston to 2-1 overtime victory over Sam Houston State Friday evening at the Carl Lewis Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston will return to action on Sunday Sept. 9 against McNeese State at the Carl Lewis Complex. Game time is slate for 5 p.m.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS
The Houston Soccer program is excited to celebrate 20 years of Houston soccer this season. The team unveiled a logo on June 14 that represents 20 years of Houston soccer. The logo is featured on one of the three uniforms that the Cougars will wear throughout the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sam Houston State got out to an early lead, scoring inside the sixth minute.
- The Cougars remained aggressive throughout the opening frame, notching nine shots and earning four corner kicks.
- With time dwindling down, Houston made its way downfield and a quick pass from Nolin Packer to Amy Nguyen resulted in Houston and Sam Houston State heading into the break tied 1-1.
- SHSU outshot Houston 4-3 in the second period and earned three more corner kicks than the Cougars.
- Houston posted two shots to the Bearkats zero in overtime. Bowen would break free and go one-on-one with the Bearkat keeper, scoring the game-winner inside the 98th minute.
- Bowen now has three goals this season and 14 for her career. This is her first game-winning goal of the season
- Nguyen now has two goals for the season and two for her career.
- Nolin Packer now has two assists for the season.
- Nine Cougars recorded shots as Houston outshot SHSU 14-13.
- Samantha Cude made her second straight start, posting one save
- This is the second overtime match for the Cougars this season and their first overtime victory since they defeated Texas State 2-1 in overtime back in 2009.
- Houston now leads the all-time series with SHSU 6-0-0
- Houston is 2-0 at home inside the Carl Lewis Complex
- Houston improves to 3-4-0 this season.
- Bowen is now one goal away from being tied for sixth all-time in goals at Houston

During its Sept. 9 match against McNeese State the Houston Soccer team will be holding a silent auction featuring special guest Olympic Medalist and World Cup Champion Shannon Boxx. All proceeds will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America – Texas Gulf Coast.
