SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston senior Matt Williams posted his second straight round in the 60s on Sunday afternoon to finish with a score of 8-under-202 and tie for sixth at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club.
A day after becoming only the eighth player in school history to shoot 64 or better, Williams posted a 66 on the 7,081-yard, par-70 course.
Starting on No. 10, the Calgary, Alberta, native enjoyed five straight pars before making his first birdie of the day on the 433-yard, par-4 15th hole. Following two more pars, Williams capped his first nine with a birdie on the par-45 18th hole.
Williams endured his lone bogey of the Final Round on No. 1 but quickly rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3. He added his final birdie of the day on the 183-yard, par-3 eighth hole.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 283 on Sunday and finished 11th at 836. Georgia Tech captured the team championship with a score of 812, while Arizona State finished second at 814.
LSU (817), NC State (819), Auburn (821), Clemson (823), Oregon (829), Kent State (831), Oregon State (833) and Augusta (833) rounded out the top-10 teams.
Individually, Clemson's Bryson Nimmer earned medalist honors with a score of 15-under 195 to finish two strokes in front of Arizona State's Chun An Yu. Oregon's Edwin Yi finished third at 200 with NC State teammates tied for fourth at 201.
Williams joined Brandon Mancheno (Auburn), Luis Gagne (LSU), Tyler Strafaci (Georgia Tech), Jovan Rebula (Auburn) and Noah Horton (Georgia Tech) in a group at 202.
Making his Houston debut this weekend, junior Logan Yogan shot a 70 for the third straight day and was tied for 35th at 210. Junior Zach Tracy tied for 39th at 211, while George Gardner tied for 70th at 221. Sophomore Alexander Frances finished 73rd at 222.
UP NEXT
Following the Maui Jim Invitational, Houston returns to action when it competes at the Maridoe Intercollegiate. That three-day event begins Oct. 6 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
From there, the Cougars tee off at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 22-23 at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas.
