SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston senior Matt Williams drained eight birdies on the way to a career-low 64 to lead the Cougars in the Second Round at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate at Mirabel Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.
Williams became only the eighth player in school history to shoot 64 or lower in a round. He also became the second Cougar to reach that total in as many years, joining current sophomore Alexander Frances, who enjoyed a 64 in the Second Round at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational on Feb. 26, 2018.
With his performance, Williams move up 37 places in the individual standings and was tied for 14th at 4-under 136 on the 7,081-yard, par-70 course. The Calgary, Alberta, native started Saturday's play on the right foot with a birdie on the 449-yard, par-4 10th hole. After a par on No. 11, Williams sank three straight birdies and added another birdie on No. 17.
He was tripped up with a double-bogey 6 on No. 18, but that proved to be the only blemish on his scorecard. Williams started his second nine with birdies on No. 1 and No. 3 and, following three straight pars, sank his final birdie of the day on the par-5 seventh hole to etch his name in the Houston records book.
"Matt is a really good putter, and he gave himself some good looks today. He did a nice job converting and his birdie production was big," said Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 10th season with the Cougars. "He had it going early with four birdies in his first five holes and got it right back after a hiccup on No. 9."
As a team, the Cougars bettered their First-Round score by three strokes with a 5-under 275 and stood in a tie for 10th with Augusta with a 36-hole total of 7-under 553.
Arizona State and LSU were tied for first at 8-under 537, while Georgia Tech was a close third at 539. NC State (546), Auburn (547), Kent State (549), Clemson (549), Oregon State (552) and Oregon (552) rounded out the top-nine leaders.
Junior All-American Athletic Conference performer Zach Tracy enjoyed a pair of birdies in his second round on the way to an even-par 70 and was tied for 19th at 3-under 141.
Making his first appearance in the Scarlet & White this weekend, junior Logan Young recorded a 70 for the second straight day and was tied for 39th at 150.
Junior George Gardner was tied for 64th at 145, while Frances was tied for 75th at 149.
Arizona State's Chun An Yu held the individual lead at 11-under 129 for a one-stroke advantage over Clemson's Bryson Nimmer. Oregon State's Shawn Lu stood in third at 131 with Tyler Strafaci (Georgia Tech) and Luis Gagne (LSU) tied for fourth at 132.
