SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – University of Houston junior Zach Tracy fired a 3-under 67 in Friday's First Round at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate to lead the Cougars and tie for 15th on Friday afternoon.
Tracy, who was an All-American Athletic Conference performer a year ago, drained four birdies with only one bogey on his scorecard to tie his career low. The Houston native started the season on the right foot with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and added his second birdie on his first nine on the par-5 seventh hole.
He enjoyed another birdie on the par-4 12th hole and, after enduring his lone bogey on No. 15, added his final birdie of the day on No. 17 on the 7,081-yard, par-70 course.
As a team, the Cougars stood in 12th with a score of 2-under 278. LSU held the first-day lead at 263, while Georgia Tech and Arizona State were tied for second at 265. Augusta (272), Minnesota (273), NC State (273), Auburn (275). Oregon (275). Georgia State (275), Kansas State (277) and Oregon State (277) rounded out the top-11 teams.
"We got off to a really nice start at 9-under through 12 holes and were in good position to post a nice round," said Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, who is in his 10th season with the Cougars. "We had a couple of hiccups coming down the stretch and didn't finish our round the way we wanted. We will address a few things tonight and regroup and be ready for Saturday."
Junior George Gardner joined Tracy in posting a red number on his scorecard. After starting Friday's play with six straight pars, the Southlake, Texas, native closed out his first nine with birdies on two of the final three holes.
Despite back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14-15, Gardner rallied with his final birdie on the 561-yard, par-5 17th hole to tie for 30th with a 69.
Making his Houston debut, junior Logan Young tied for 36th with an even-par 70, while senior Matt Williams was tied for 56th at 72. Sophomore Alexander Frances was tied for 77th at 78.
LSU's Luis Gagne posted a 62 in the First Round to hold the individual lead by a stroke over Oregon State's Shawn Lu. Twelve golfers were tied for third at 65.
