Houston Opens Conference Play at Home

Cougars face Owls and Huskies in Athletics/Alumni Center
MATCH NOTES
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team takes one of its best starts in program history into American Athletic Conference play, as the Cougars host Temple and UConn this weekend at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Houston will open up its conference slate with a matchup against Temple on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. For their match with the Owls, the Cougars "Turn it Gold," as the team will wear gold laces on their shoes to help raises awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer.
Following the Cougars' contest with the Huskies on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m., Houston will host the Flo Hyman Clinic, where young fans will have opportunity to receive a basic introduction to the sport from current Houston Volleyball players.

- With their 13-2 record, the Cougars are off to their best 15-game start since the 1989 campaign, when the team began the year 13-2 as well. The 13 victories also marks the most wins in a season since 2015.
- Houston enters the weekend possessing one of the best overall records in the country, as the Cougars' .867 win percentage ranks 22nd in the nation. With its 13 wins on the year, Houston is also tied for the most victories amongst all other Division I teams.
- The Cougars enter the weekend with one of the most potent offenses in the nation, ranking inside the top five in the nation in kills (766, 2nd), assists (710, 3rd) and service aces (102, 2nd).
- Commanding the Cougars' 6-2 offense is the dynamic duo made up of senior setter Katie Krebs and sophomore setter Abby Irvine. Together, they average 10.52 assists per set, which has guided Houston to average 12.46 helpers per frame.
- Freshman middle blocker Kendall Haywood has a wasted no time adjusting to the collegiate game, quickly becoming one of the most effective middle blockers in the country. While her .436 hitting percentage ranks eighth in the country, she also finds herself inside the top 15 (T13th) in the nation with her 64.0 total blocks.
- In its first 15 matches of the 2018 campaign, Houston has already garnered its share of All-Tournament honors, racking in a total of eight All-Tournament accolades. Krebs, along with sophomore outside hitter Megan Duncan have earned an MVP honor, while junior libero Katie Karbo, junior outside hitter Faith Squier and Haywood have each received an All-Tournament accolade twice.
