MONTGOMERY, Texas â€" University of Houston sophomore Pryce Beshoory overcame a challenge early in the Second Round of the Bearkat Invitational on Monday afternoon to stand in a tie for fifth place at the Bearkat Invitational.
In a recent addition to the Cougars' spring schedule, Beshoory joined with sophomores Tony Gil and Sam Elkington and redshirt freshman Andrew Gibson to compete as individuals at the tournament at Walden at Lake Conroe Golf Club.
After posting a 2-under 70 in Monday's First Round and starting his Second Round on No. 10 on the 6,756-yard, par-72 layout, Beshoory endured a 10 on the par-5 11th hole. Undaunted, the Pearland, Texas, native proceeded to birdie three of the next five holes, including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13-14.
He added another set of consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-3 and rallied to finish the round with a 74 and finish the day at even-par 144.
Beshoory opened the tournament with five birdies in the First Round. Starting on No. 10, he enjoyed his first birdie on No. 13 and closed out his first nine with birdies on No. 16 and No. 18.
Despite three bogeys on his back nine, the Pearland, Texas, native added a pair of birdies on the way to a 70.
Jake McCrory held the individual lead through 36 holes at 7-under 137. UT Rio Grande Valley's Tennoshin Ogawa was in second at 141, while Sam Houston State's William Holcomb and UTRGV's Alvaro Hernandez were tied for third at 143.
Beshoory joined UTRGV's Pedro Lamadrid in a tie for fifth.
Elkington finished the first day in a tie for 25th at 152, while Gibson was tied for 28th at 153. Gil opened the tournament with a 69 in the morning but was forced to withdraw in the Second Round.
UT Rio Grande Valley held the first-day lead with a team score of 570 to finish two strokes ahead of host Sam Houston State. UIW (592), Stephen F. Austin (595) and Midland Community College (602) rounded out the Top-5 team leaders.

FINAL ROUND on TUESDAY
Tuesday's Final Round begins with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student0-athletes from UIW and Texas Southern.
Beshoory will begin his day in the first group off No. 10, while Elkington (second group off No. 10), Gibson (No. 11) and Gil (No. 12) will follow.
UP NEXT
Following the Bearkat Invitational, the Cougars will compete as a team in their regular-season finale at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas, on April 7-8.
From there, Houston takes its first step into the postseason when it tees off at the American Athletic Conference Championships on April 22-24 on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Perras looks to defend his American Athletic Conference Championships individual title from a year ago. With that championship, he became the first Cougar in program history to win NCAA Regional and conference championships titles during his career.
