BASEBALL
Last Week
Houston Baseball went 5-0 at Schroeder Park. The Cougars defeated Lamar, 3-1, and Prairie View A&M, 9-2, before sweeping Memphis to open American Athletic Conference play. With its wins, Houston, winners of eight straight, improved to 16-8 overall and 3-0 in The American.

Against Lamar, Houston used a three-run seventh inning to come from behind for a 3-1 victory … Brayson Hurdsman tossed a career-long six-and-one-third innings, before being relieved by Joey Pulido and Carter Henry, who picked up the win and save, respectively … Against PVAMU, a seven-run second inning proved more than enough in a 9-2 victory over the Panthers … Against Memphis, starters Trey Cumbie and Aaron Fletcher each tossed complete-game shutouts … Cumbie scattered three hits while walking one and striking out eight on Friday, while Fletcher walked none and fanned a career-high nine on Saturday … On Sunday, the Cougars cranked out nine runs on 14 hits … Sophomore Jared Triolo highlighted the offense with a 2-for-4 showing with a home run, walk, four RBI and one run scored … Triolo went 11-for-21 for the week to garner The American Player of the Week honors, while Fletcher was named the Pitcher of the Week and Cumbie made the Honor Roll … Last week, senior infielder Connor Hollis was named one of 30 NCAA collegiate baseball candidates for the Senior CLASS Award … Houston's Friday, May 4, contest against UCF will be streamed on the American Digital Network.
MEN'S BASKETBALL

After leading Houston Men's Basketball to the NCAA Tournament with 27 wins and a perfect 15-0 home record, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson was honored as the National Association of Basketball Coaches District 25 Coach of the Year … Sampson, also the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, led the Cougars to one of their best seasons since 1983-84 … With a 27-8 overall record, the 2017-18 Cougars became only the sixth team in school history to enjoy 27-plus wins in a single season … He became only the 14th coach in NCAA history to lead four-plus schools to the NCAA Tournament during their careers, having previously led Indiana, Oklahoma and Washington State into March Madness … Sampson's Cougars posted a pair of Top-10 wins against No. 7/4 Wichita State (Jan. 20) and No. 5/5 Cincinnati (Feb. 15), becoming the first Houston team to accomplish that feat since 1983-84.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Houston Women's Basketball Assistant Coach Vicky Picott was announced as an inaugural inductee to the Mercer County Basketball Hall of Fame … The Mercer County Basketball Hall of Fame induction will be held Sunday, March 18, at 4 p.m., at Mercer Oaks in West Windsor Township, N.J. … Picott began her basketball career in Mercer County at Hightstown High School in New Jersey before moving on to Rutgers where she graduated in 1992 ranked third in rebounds (1,029), fourth in school history in points (1,792) and fifth in steals … In 1988, Picott was named Atlantic-10 Freshman of the Year … Following her senior season, Picott was named New Jersey Sports Writers Association Player of the Year as well as a District II Regional All-American … Also a Rutgers Hall of Fame inductee, Picott was selected to the 1987 and 1989 Olympic Festival Teams and played for the Junior World Championship team that won a Gold Medal in Saw Paulo, Brazil.

Houston Softball went 4-1. The Cougars swept a doubleheader at Sam Houston State on Tuesday before taking two of three at ECU to open American Athletic Conference play. With the results, Houston moved 21-10 on the season and 2-1 in The American.

At SHSU, junior Savannah Heebner picked up a pair of wins in the circle … The native of Sedalia, Colo., tossed a one-hitter in the first game, retiring the final 19 batters she face, before tossing three innings of relief in the nightcap … Sophomore second baseman Arielle James led the offense, going 4-for-7 between the two games … In the first game, James was one of six Cougars to record a base hit before following with a 3-for-4 effort with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in the second game … After falling 3-2 in eight innings at ECU in The American opener for both teams, Houston rebounded with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday … Sophomore third baseman Sarah Queen went 5-for-5 between the two games with a double, home run, four walks, six RBI and three runs scored … In the first game, Queen tied her career high with a three-hit showing … Sophomore Trystan Melancon and Heebner each picked up wins in the doubleheader to improve to 5-4 and 13-3, respectively … Melancon tossed five innings, before being relieved by junior Presley Bell and Heebner … In the second game, Heebner tossed a two-hitter with three strikeouts in recording her sixth of the season and 15th overall of her career … For their efforts, both Queen and Heebner were named to The American Weekly Honor Roll … The Cougars' game against UCF on Friday, March 30, and series finale at USF on Sunday, April 8, will be streamed on the American Digital Network.

After sweeping the doubles point, Sveva Mazzari, Tsveta Dmimitrova and Ana Glumac all picked up victories … Mazzari and Glumac each won 6-0, 6-0, while Dmimitrova win 6-2, 6-0 … With the sweep, the Cougars improved to 11-0 at home, continuing their best start on their home court since 2006.
TRACK & FIELD
Last Week
Houston Track & Field continued its outdoor season with its participation in Rice's Victor Lopez Classic and the Prairie View A&M Relays. In total, the Cougars posted 12 wins and 18 overall podium finishes, including five nation-leading times and two world-leading marks.

At Rice, senior distance runner Brian Barraza ran a program-record 8:41.58 to win the 3,000-meter steeplechase … With the mark, Barraza broke Jeff Thompson's best of 8:46.3, which he set at the Texas Relays in 1977 … The time moved Barraza to No. 1 on the NCAA list in the steeplechase this year and sets him at No. 9 in the world in the early season … Barraza now owns six Houston records including the outdoor 5,000- and 10,000-meter run as well as the indoor mile, 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs … Junior Felipe Valencia won the shot put with a throw of 58-11.25 (17.96m) to move to No. 13 in that nation this season … Sophomore Samiyah Samuels won the long jump with a personal-best bound of 20-7.25 (6.29m) to move to third in the NCAA in the early season … Colin George posted the nation's 12th-best mark at 6-10.75 (2.10m) to win the high jump … Houston's men and women swept the 4x100-meter relays in 39.96 and 45.15, respectively … Freshman Naomi Taylor won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.45 … Amere Lattin won 110-meter hurdles in 14.09 … Quivell Jordan ran the fastest time in the nation this season in 51.11 to win the 400-meter hurdles … Houston won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:10.44 to move to No. 12 in the NCAA … For complete results from the Victor Lopez Classic, click …At PVAMU, Houston's men turned in the top performance in the world this season in the 4x100-meter relay … Competing amongst three Team USA squads, the Cougar squad of Mario Burke, Elijah Hall, John Lewis III and Cameron Burrell relayed one-lap around the track in 38.95 to win … Lewis III also ran a wind-aided 10.13 to win the 100-meter dash and claim the No. 1 time in the NCAA this season … Houston clocked another world-best mark in the 4x200-meter relay, as Burke, Burrell and Hall were joined by All-American Kahmari Montgomery to run 1:21.19 … For complete results from the Prairie View A&M Relays, click here …Houston's Men's Track & Field Team was ranked the No. 3 team in the initial USTFCCCA poll released last week … Lattin was named The American Track Athlete of the Week last Tuesday for sweeping the 110-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash at the Cougar Spring Break Invitational.
