HOUSTON -- Grayson Padgett belted a 12th inning, walk off home run and Carter Henry tossed 4.2 shutout innings in relief to lift Houston Baseball to an exciting 4-3 win over San Diego in the weekend series opener at Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 7-6 on the year, while the Toreros fell to 8-6.

Padgett's home run was the first of the year for the junior outfielder and Henry tied his career-high in relief innings with 4.2 shutout frames.

HOUSTON HITS

Connor Hollis collected Houston's first triple of the year.
Jared Triolo has reached base in 12 straight games.
Landon Etzel tallied two RBI en route to his second straight multi-RBI game.
Grayson Padgett belted his first home run of the year and third of his career.

After missing the last three games due to a death in the family, Grayson Padgett was the offensive hero on Friday, leading Houston at the plate with three hits, highlighted by the walk-off, game-winning home run in the 12th inning. He tallied three hits, one run and one RBI.

Adding to the offense with three hits was sophomore Jared Triolo. Sophomore Landon Etzel provided the mid-game spark, tying the game up in the bottom of the seventh with a clutch, two-run single, while senior Connor Hollis tripled and had one hit.

Sophomore reliever Carter Henry was the unsung hero on Friday, lifting the Cougars to a 4-3 win. The righty tossed a career-long 4.2 relief innings, allowing just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. The shutout performance led him to his first win of the year, moving to 1-0.

Henry allowed just four base runners on a HBP, two walks and single, but the single was erased with a caught stealing to close out the ninth inning.

Junior starter Trey Cumbie went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He handed the ball over to sophomore Brayson Hurdsman, who pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, one walk with one strikeout.

KEY INNINGS
3rd | San Diego used three hits, including a three-run home run to take an early 3-0 lead.

Houston responded with a run of its own when Landon Etzel reached on a two-out walk and came around to score on a triple into the right center gap to make it a 3-1 game.

7th | With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Landon Etzel came up huge, registering a two-run single to plate Nick Slaughter and Jared Triolo, who each singled to open the inning. The two-run single tied the game at 3-3.

12th | It took 12 innings for the 3-3 score to break open, but it was worth the wait when Grayson Padgett belted a leadoff, walk off home run to open the bottom of the 12th for the Cougars.

Houston and San Diego will continue its three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and wrap at 1 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder Park. Gates open two hours prior to first pitch.
