Houston Clinches Series over San Diego

HOUSTON -- Highlighted by another stellar pitching performance by starter Aaron Fletcher, Houston Baseball clinched the weekend series with San Diego following a 5-2 win on Saturday at Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 8-6 on the year, while San Diego fell to 8-7.
HOUSTON HITS
- Jared Triolo has reached base in 13 straight games.
- Aaron Fletcher improved to 3-0 on the year in his fourth start, tossing 6.0 innings without allowing an earned run.
- Houston tallied five hits and three runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead midway through the game.
- Lael Lockhart Jr. earned his first career save for Houston. He also registered the Cougars' first save of 2018.
- The Cougars have won their third straight weekend series (Holy Cross, Cal State Fullerton, San Diego) to open 2018.

Cooper Coldiron drove in two RBI on a base hit and Connor Hollis doubled and drove in a run. Rey Fuentes III led Houston with three hits and Nick Slaughter scored two runs.

Junior Aaron Fletcher improved to 3-0 with another stellar starting performance. The southpaw didn't allow an earned run on four hits and one walk in 6.0 innings of work. He fanned two.
Redshirt freshman Hunter Edwards pitched a career-long 2.1 innings in relief, allowing just two hits, while shutting San Diego down. He handed the ball over to sophomore Lael Lockhart Jr., who earned his first career save, allowing just one bunt single and a walk in 0.2 innings.
KEY INNINGS
2nd | Houston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second when Nick Slaughter walked to lead off the inning and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
3rd | San Diego took advantage of a Houston error and a sacrifice fly opportunity to go ahead of the Cougars, 2-1 in the third.
4th | Houston strung together a five-hit frame, all of which came before San Diego recorded an out. Rey Fuentes III, Nick Slaughter and Jared Triolo loaded the bases with three consecutive hits before Cooper Coldiron plated a pair on a two-run single up the middle to make it a 3-2 game. After a Grayson Padgett single, Kyle Lovelace reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Triolo to put the Cougars ahead by two at 4-2.
6th | Connor Hollis came up huge, plating Kyle Lovelace from first, on an RBI-double to dead center field to make it a 5-2 game in favor of the Cougars.

Houston and San Diego will wrap up its three-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
