HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program closes out its non-conference schedule and the year 2018 when it meets NJIT for the first time in school history at 3 p.m., Saturday, inside the Fertitta Center in a game presented by Maintenance Supply Headquarters.
Standing at No. 5 in the latest NCAA NET rankings and among the Top 25 in both the USA TODAY Coaches and Associated Press polls, the Cougars are one of only five undefeated teams in NCAA Division I, joining Virginia, Michigan, St. John's and Nevada.
With a win against the Highlanders, the Cougars will extend the nation's longest active home winning streak to 26 consecutive games and set a school record with their 13th non-conference regular-season victory, breaking out of a tie with the 1954-55 team's 12 wins (only in seasons in which Houston competed as a conference member).
The Cougars' home winning streak is the fifth longest mark in school history while the current 12-game winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest streak and the longest since the 1989-90 team won 13 straight games from Jan. 24 to March 10, 1990.
The Cougars enter this weekend's game on the heels of a 75-44 win over Coppin State on Sunday in the biggest victory in the Fertitta Center's young history. Senior guard Corey Davis Jr. led all players with 16 points, thanks to four 3-pointers, while senior forward Breaon Brady added 13 points with three rebounds and junior guard Armoni Brooks totaled 10 points with a game-high nine rebounds.
Houston's defense outrebounded CSU 55-39 and limited the Eagles to only 21.5 percent (14-of-65) shooting from the field. According to UH records, that ranks as the second lowest field goal percentage by an opponent in school history and was the lowest since the 1954-55 team held Bradley to only 21.0 percent (17-of-81) on Feb. 5, 1955, in Houston.
This season, Brooks leads the Cougars with 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, making him one of only three players to rank among the American Athletic Conference' Top-12 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.
Davis stands second on the team with 15.1 points per game, while senior guard Galen Robinson Jr. is third with 8.9 points per game with a team-best 5.7 assists per contest.
