Bria Patterson, Jazmaine Lewis join Houston family
HOUSTON – Head Coach Ronald Hughey and the Houston Cougar Women's Basketball program are excited to announce the signing of Bria Patterson and Jazmaine Lewis to National Letters of Intent.
Patterson and Lewis will join the Cougars as freshmen for the 2019-20 season.
BRIA PATTERSON | GUARD/FORWARD | DeSOTO HIGH SCHOOL
Patterson is a 6-1 guard/forward hybrid out of DeSoto High School who also plays AAU for Nike EYBL-DFW Elite. Patterson is active on both sides of the ball and can score in transition and from mid-range while being a versatile defender and an aggressive rebounder.
"Bria is a lot like Serithia Hawkins," Hughey said. "She's long and athletic. Her character and who she is really stand out. She's going to be tremendous for us, because we're filling in with a person just like Serithia. All of her attributes are just tremendous for us. We expect a lot of things out of her as a freshman to come in and really enhance the program."
As a junior at DeSoto, Patterson averaged a double-double with 12.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per night while tallying 3.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. Patterson is a 3-time First Team All-District honoree and earned 2017-18 TABC All Region honors as well as Academic All-District laurels.
"Bria is very similar to Serithia Hawkins," Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Tai Dillard said. "She's going to work hard on both ends. She's really athletic and runs the floor really well. She can score really well as far as getting to the rim, she has a nice mid-range game, and she has actually been working on stretching out to the 3-point range as well. She's a tenacious rebounder. She has a knack for coming up with a lot of rebounds. We're really excited to get her. She's a good kid that works hard in the classroom and on the court, so it's really exciting that she's joining our Cougar family."
JAZMAINE LEWIS | CENTER | CENTER HIGH SCHOOL
Lewis is a 6-5 center out of Center High School in Kansas City, Mo. Lewis has tremendous length in the low-post, and her wingspan gives her an excellent shot-blocking presence. Lewis is developing a low-post offensive mentality, which shows the potential to be a force down low for Houston.
"Jazmaine is going to be the first 6-4, 6-5 player that we've had that has some size," Hughey said. "She has really good hands and a really good basketball IQ. She's not as mobile as we'd like right now, but she'll come in and get interjected into what we do, and then be able to do what we need her to do. She's going to score around the basket and from the high post. She's another high-character kid, and she's going to be really, really good for us."
Lewis has earned First Team All-District and All-Conference honors in each of her first three seasons at Center High School. Lewis, a teammate of current Houston freshman Jaidah Stewart with the Missouri Phenom, averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 5.6 blocks per game during her junior season and broke single-game school records with 33 rebounds and 12 blocks in one game.
"The biggest thing about Jazmaine is she's going to be a true low-post presence," Associate Head Coach Vicky Picott said. "She has great hands and great footwork. She will also be a great run protector with the ability to alter and block shots."
