HOUSTON – Houston Cougar Women's Basketball redshirt sophomore forward Alyssa Okoene has been named The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Okoene averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest in the first two games of her career. Okoene also tallied an assist and two steals in 56 minutes of play against 24/RV California and Georgia Tech.
In her Houston debut against the Bears, Okoene shot 3-of-3 from the field to combine for seven points and pulled down two offensive rebounds, despite playing just 15 minutes due to foul trouble.
Okoene showed up big three nights later against the Yellow Jackets, a contest where she made the first start of her career. The North Shore HS alum paced the team with 26 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Okoene shot 10-of-16 from the floor, including a layup as time expired to tie the contest and send the game to a second overtime.
