Karbo’s Performance Not Enough against Tulsa

Libero posts match-high 21 digs
TULSA, Okla. – Junior libero Katie Karbo posted a match-high 21 digs, but her efforts couldn't spark the University of Houston Volleyball team, as the Cougars fell 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 18-25) to Tulsa on Sunday afternoon.
Heading into the final three matches of the season, the Cougars sit at 16-14 on the year and 3-12 in The American, while the Golden Hurricane moves to 18-9 and 10-5 in conference matchups.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
With a potent offense that ranks inside the top 50 in the country in total kills, Houston came out to a blistering hot start. Led by freshman outside hitter Alexis Cheatum, who paced the offense with four kills midway through the set, the Cougars began the match hitting .400, which helped build their 12-8 lead over the Golden Hurricane. After Tulsa went on a run to take a 17-16 advantage, Houston's offense was halted and the Golden Hurricane capitalized. Tulsa finished out the set on a 4-0 run to win the frame 25-20.
Set 2
Once the Cougars found themselves in an early seven-point hole, Houston put four-straight points on the board and climbed its way back into it, trimming the deficit to three at 9-6. The Cougars continued to keep the momentum on its side, tying the score at 14 and ultimately took the lead at 16-15, thanks to a kill from freshman middle blocker Kendall Haywood. From there, the two teams were neck and neck with each other, but it was Tulsa who came out on top, edging the Cougars 25-23 to take a 2-0 match lead at the intermission.
Set 3
A slow start from the Cougars put them in an 8-3 deficit, which Houston was never able to rebound from. The Cougars managed to string together a couple of points a pull within three, but the Golden Hurricane responded with four unanswered points to take a 12-6 advantage, which set the pace to its 25-18 set win to seal the 3-0 match victory.

Houston returns home for its final three matches of the 2018 campaign, beginning with USF on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. CT. Following its contest with No. 22 UCF on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 1 p.m. CT, the Cougars will host SMU on Wednesday, Nov. 21.
First serve for Houston's match with the Mustangs is slated for 1 p.m. PT. Fans are encouraged to come to the Athletics/Alumni Center prior to the match for a special pregame ceremony that will honor Houston's three players who will play their final match in a Cougar uniform.

- Leading the conference in service aces per set, Houston showed its strength at the service line today with four aces. Redshirt freshman defensive specialist Kylie Napoleon led the team with a pair.
- Junior libero Katie Karbo recorded a match-high 21 digs on the afternoon, the 18th time this season she's led the match in digs.
- Freshman outside hitter Alexis Cheatum led the Cougars with a match-high 11 kills. It's the third occasion this year she's led the team in kills.
- Both of Houston's middle blockers, senior Chenelle Walker and freshman Kendall Haywood, led the Cougars with three blocks each.
