Head Coach Kelvin Sampson & student-athletes stress the importance of exercise
Sampson and the Cougars talked and took photos, and most importantly, just had fun with the patients and their families. The event was part of the MD Anderson Cancer Center's ProFit program, which emphasizes the importance of daily physical activity for the patients as they fight the disease.
ProFit was created by Dr. Keri Schadler and her MD Anderson Cancer Center colleagues in the pediatric cancer ward. Results from Schadler's lab on mouse models has shown that exercise may make chemotherapy more effective on some types of cancer.
Senior guards Corey Davis Jr. and Landon Goesling, junior center Chris Harris Jr., junior guard Armoni Brooks and freshman guard Neil VanBeck played hula hoops, basketball and soccer with several patients and their siblings throughout the morning after they entered the Center's Pedidome.
Inside the Pedidome, the event was held on Craig's Court, dedicated in memory of longtime NBA broadcaster Craig Sager, who fought the disease as a patient at the hospital in 2016. With a six-year career as an assistant coach in the NBA, Sampson developed a friendship with Sager through the years and visited him at MD Anderson Cancer Center during his treatment.
