10 Podium Finishes Highlight First Day of Quad

HOUSTON â€" The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team recorded 10 podium finishes in its first day of action against Rice, LSU, and Tulane Friday evening at the CRWC.
"I'm excited about a lot of the things I saw today, mission accomplished," said Head Swimming & Diving Coach Ryan Wochomurka. "Today we continued to focus on race preparation, race strategy, and execution for what we want to do 18 days from now. This is just another step towards that. The challenge for tomorrow is to come out and continue to work hard."
Houston opened the session on a high note, taking second-place and third-place in the opening event of the afternoon. Kathryn Powers, Ashley Grijalva, Rebecca Cox, and Hanna Blewett clocked a finishing time of 3:46.71 in the 400 Medley Relay for second-place. Laura Laderoute, Peyton Kondis, Victoria Tillman, and Zarena Brown finished nine milliseconds behind their teammates for a third-place finish in the event at 3:46.79.
Hannah Herbst led the Cougars in the 1000 Freestyle, touching the wall at 10:11.77 for sixth-place overall.
Houston notched two more podium finishes in the third event of the evening, the 100 Butterfly. Cox notched the Cougars first top finish of the day after touching the wall in 55.42. Sharo Rodriguez finished less than a second later at 55.98 for second-place.
Katie Powers posted Houston's highest finish in the 100 Backstroke after clocking a time of 56.18 for fifth-place. Laderoute finished less than a second later for sixth-place in the event.
Breaststroke specialist Gaby Jimenez Peon turned in a second-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke after touching the wall in 2:18.25.
Houston's sixth podium finish of the evening came by way of Brown who touched the wall at 1:49.78 for third-place in the event.
Blewett continued to have a successful day in the water, clocking a time of 23.75 for fourth-place in the 50 Freestyle.
Laderoute notched her second podium finish, closing out the 200 IM in third-place with a time of 2:06.34.
The Cougars closed out the first day of the meet much like they began, posting second-place and third-place finishes in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Victoria Padial, Power, Blewett, and Cox teamed up and posted a time of 1:35.20 for second. Less than a second later, Mykenzie Leehy, Cait Horner, Brown, and Ksenia Yuskova finished the race in 1:35.84 for third-place.
On the springboards, Micaela Bouter took second-place in the 3-Meter with 325.25 points. Lauren Burrell finished with 245.45 points to take fifth-place and Alexandra Gutierrez notched a seventh-place finish at 197.55 points.
