CINCINNATI -- The University of Houston Men's Basketball program wraps up its 2016-17 regular-season road schedule when it takes on No. 18/20 Cincinnati at 6 p.m. (CST) Thursday, inside Fifth Third Arena.
Winners of seven of its last eight games, the Cougars now stand at 20-8 overall and are in third at 11-5 in the latest American Athletic Conference standings. This marks the second straight season in which Houston has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons, a first since 2007-08 and 2008-09.
Much of the Cougars' success has come from the road this season. Houston has enjoyed a 6-2 record in conference road games in 2016-17, marking the second straight year that the Cougars have recorded 6+ conference road wins in a single season. It's only the second time in Houston history that feat has been accomplished in consecutive years and the first since 1982-83 and 1983-84.
Thursday's game will be the first of two "Final" games for Houston this week. As Houston fans know, the Cougars play host to East Carolina at 3 p.m., Sunday, on Senior Day during the Final Game inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Houston's facility will undergo a $60 million renovation later this month and be transformed into the Fertitta Center for the 2018-19 season.
However, Thursday's game also will be the final game for Cincinnati as the Fifth Third Arena undergoes renovations of its own after this season.
Junior guard Rob Gray continues to lead the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference with 20.3 points per game and is looking to become the Cougars' first conference scoring champion since guard Aubrey Coleman in 2009-10.
The Forest City, N.C., native is the only Cougar to score double-digit points in every game in which he has played this season.
Senior guard Damyean Dotson has been the hottest player in recent games and scored a game-high 31 points, including the game-winning free throw with 3.3 seconds left, in the Cougars' 72-71 win at Memphis on Sunday evening.
Dotson is one of only three players to rank among The American's top-12 leaders in both scoring and rebounding and joins with Gray to make Houston the only team with two of the league's top-four scorers.
