HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third consecutive match, Houston raced in front with a win in doubles play. On Court 1, the duo of Tsveta Dimitrova and Cristina Rovira defeated Jelena Dzinic and Judit Vives 6-3, before Sveva Mazzari and Lauren Alter knocked off Alexander Belle and Hortense Boscher 6-4 on Court 3. With the win for Dimitrova/Rovira the team moved to 2-0 on the season, while Alter and Mazzari teamed for the first time this year.
On court 2, Constandena Nicolaou and Ana Glumac trailed Louise Trigona and Marina Vicens Miquel 4-5 when doubles play was halted.
Houston opened singles play with a straight-set victory from Mazzari over Dzinic to push the score to 2-0. The 6-2, 6-2 win for Mazzari extends her singles-play winning streak to three and improves her record to 3-1 on the season.
The Islanders picked up their first point of the afternoon from Vicens Miquel on Court 6. Matched up against Glumac, Vicens Miquel won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 and cut the lead to 2-1 Houston. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi would then even the score with a win on Court 3 after Vives defeated Rovira 6-3, 6-2.
Houston reclaimed the lead with a win on Court 1 from Dimitrova. After cruising to a 6-1 victory in the first set, Dimitrova had to battle to get the straight-set victory, winning set two in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4). The win for Dimitrova gave Houston a 3-2 lead and was her second victory this season.
Trigona and Alter were locked in a tight contest throughout singles play. The Islander claimed set one 6-0, but Alter answered with a 6-3 win in the second set. The deciding set stayed close, but it was Trigona who came away with a 7-5 win to pick up the point and even the team score at 3 apiece.
The overall match came down to Nicolaou and Maldonado on Court 5. Maldonado struck first with a 7-5 win in the first set, but Nicolaou had an answer to even the match with a 6-4 win in set two.
