NEW ORLEANS â€" The University of Houston Women's Golf program opens the team portion of its 2017 spring schedule this weekend when it tees off at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Golf & Country Club.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 9 a.m., Sunday and continues with 18 holes each day through Tuesday on the 6,239-yard, par-72 course.
While this will be the first team-scoring tournament in which the Cougars will compete in 2017, it isn't the team's first action this semester. Earlier this week, the Cougars sent four student-athletes to compete at the Texas State Invitational at The Bandit Golf Club in New Braunfels, Texas.
Battling wind, overcast skies and cool temperatures, sophomore Leonie Harm enjoyed a steady effort and captured the first individual tournament title of her collegiate career with a three-round score of 218. She was joined among the top-20 leaders by junior Megan Thothong.
TEAM FIELD
The Cougars will face an elite field with seven of the nation's top 25 and nine of the top 50 program. That group includes No. 1 Stanford, No. 3 Florida, No. 11 Miami (Fla.), No. 19 UCF, No. 20 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Texas, No. 23 Arizona, No. 39 Oregon, No. 43 Clemson, Denver, Virginia, Mississippi State, UTSA and LSU.
