Bouter, Kondis Win Conference Crowns; Cougars Lead on Day 3

HOUSTON â€" Junior Micaela Bouter and freshman Peyton Kondis won individual conference titles as the Cougars took the lead at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships Friday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
The Cougars bolted into first place with 507 points after an outstanding evening. Houston leads the defending American Athletic Champions SMU by 69 points. While Cincinnati rounds out the podium with a score of 408.
Kondis earned her first American Athletic Conference crown in the 100-yard breaststroke. The Pittsburg, Penn., native, bettered her school record during prelims with a time of 1:00.56. Kondis captured first overall after touching the wall at 1:00.73. Fellow freshman Victoria Roubique placed second with a time of 1:00.97, a NCAA B standard time. Junior Ashley Grijalva finished fourth, 1:01.48 a personal best, and senior Cameron Balkom placed sixth, 1:02.34.
For the second consecutive year, junior Bouter won the 3-meter springboard. The Johannesburg, native soundly beat the field after netting a score of 322.15. Bouter's best dive came in the first round on her forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike earning a score of 67.50. Freshman Katelyn Abernathy nabbed her first medal after coming from behind to finish second overall. The Charlotte, N.C., native, netted a 64.40 on her back 2 ½ somersault tuck to earn a spot on the podium. With Abernathy's score of 287.35 she now qualifies for NCAA zones.
In the 100-yard backstroke Houston captured two podium finishes. Freshman Laura Laderoute finished second overall after touching the wall at 53.81. Sophomore Eleanna Koutsouveli rounded out the podium with a time of 54.07. The Athens, Greece, native, set the school record during prelims with a time of 53.74, an NCAA B standard time. Senior Jasmine Williams finished fifth overall, 54.62.
Miami (Fla.) transfer Ksenia Yuskova finished second overall in the 200-yard freestyle. The Moscow, Russia, native, set a personal best and moves up the record books to the second best time in program history with a time of 1:45.82.
To cap off the night the 400-yard medley relay team set a school record and earned Houston's eight medal of the evening. The team of Laderoute, Kondis, Sharo Rodriguez and Yuskova touched the wall at 3:38.35 to break the program record and finish second overall.

The Cougars take to the water for the final day Saturday at the American Championships. COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the second consecutive year as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 15-18. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 15-18 in Indianapolis, Ind.
