Laderoute Claims Conference Title on Second Day of Championships

HOUSTON â€" Laura Laderoute claims Houston Swimming & Diving's first conference title as the freshman wins 200-yard IM at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships Thursday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
The Cougars are on the heels of Cincinnati as Houston currently holds second overall with a score of 231, four points behind the Bearcats. The defending American Athletic Conference Champions SMU round out the podium at 213.
Laderoute earned her first conference crown in the 200-yard IM. The West Linn, Ore., native bettered her own school record touching the wall at 2:00.02 to capture first overall. Fellow freshman Peyton Kondis set a personal best with a time of 2:01.60, an NCAA B standard time, to finish fifth.
In the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Zarena Brown nabbed her first individual medal, second of the meet. The Arvada, Colo., native, swam a time of 4:46.11 to finish third overall and move to the second best time in program history.
Junior Cait Horner moved up in the record books in the 50-yard freestyle. The Yorktown, Va., native finished fourth overall with a time of 22.93, the second fastest time in school history.
In the final event of the evening, the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Cougars captured another podium finish. The team of Horner, Laderoute, Brown and Ksenia Yuskova nabbed a third place finish as they set a new program record with a time of 1:31.61, breaking a four-year program record.

COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the second consecutive year as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 15-18. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 15-18 in Indianapolis, Ind.
