Cougars Shatter Two Records to Open Conference

HOUSTON â€" University of Houston Swimming & Diving saw two program records fall as the Cougars opened the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday night at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
Through three events, the Cougars are second overall with a score of 104. UConn leads the way in first with a score of 118 while East Carolina is in third, at 90.
Two program records fell as Houston opened the conference championships. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Eleanna Koutsouveli, Peyton Kondis, Laura Laderoute and Cait Horner set a new school record. The Cougars finished second overall in the event, touching the wall at 1:39.17.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of Zarena Brown, Ksenia Yuskova, Michaela Hamrick and Hannah Herbst broke a four year record. The relay team finished fourth overall with a time 7:13.35 to break the record set by Moira Fraser, Heather Winn, Colleen Donovan and Kimmy Ballo on Feb. 20, 2013.
Micaela Bouter was the highest finisher for the Cougars in the 1-meter springboard. The Johannesburg native finished fourth overall with after nabbing a score of 252.40.
UP NEXT
The Cougars take to the water again on Thursday for the second day of competition at the American Championships. Swimming preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., and the finals start at 6 p.m. A complete schedule and links to live video streaming can be found at The American's Championships Central Page.
COUGARS TO HOST AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Houston will host the American Athletic Conference Championships for the second consecutive year as the best swimmers and divers in the league visit the CRWC from Feb. 15-18. Following the conference meet, the Cougars will look to close the season at the NCAA Championships, to be held March 15-18, 2017 in Indianapolis, Ind.
