Softball Wins Game One Over Memphis

HOUSTON -- A 12-hit performance led Houston Softball to a 6-1 win over Memphis in the series opener on Friday.
The Cougars improved to 24-28 on the season, 7-9 in the American Athletic Conference while Memphis fell to 26-28, 7-9 in league play.
Senior Katie St. Pierre led the Cougars as she went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Freshmen Rachel Hill and Maya Thomas went 2-for-3 against the Tigers.
Houston opened on a three-run inning in the bottom of the first off four hits and a Tiger error.
Two innings later, Hill belted her third home run of the year to push the Cougars lead to 4-0.
Memphis' Tyler Johnson responded with a one-out solo home run to left field to put the tigers on the board.
Freshman Brooke Vannoy opened the bottom of the fourth with a one-out base hit to the shortstop. St. Pierre moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt before a mishandled throw sent Vannoy home.
The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back hits to seal the 6-1 win.
Freshman RHP Savannah Heebner (7-7) earned the win for the Cougars. In her sixth complete game, Heebner allowed seven hits and only one run while striking out three.
NEXT AT BAT
Houston Softball returns to the field tomorrow for game two of the series vs. Memphis. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. The Cougars will honor their final senior, Katie St. Pierre, prior to the first pitch.
