HOUSTON â€" With a 2-1 win over Memphis on Saturday, Houston Softball claimed its second American Athletic Conference series win of the season.
The Cougars improve to 25-28 on the year, 8-9 in conference play while Memphis drops to 26-29, 7-10 in the league. With the two wins, Houston jumps Memphis to fourth in league standings.
After two and a half scoreless frames, three Houston hits and good base running led the Cougars to a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Kaylin Crumpton hit a lead off double to left and advanced to third on a base hit by Courtney Klingler. De'Zha Scott entered to run for Klingler when the Cougars made the double steal to plate the first run of the game.
Memphis responded in the top of the sixth when the Tigers tied the game 1-1 off a walk, a hit and a sacrifice flyout.
Houston quickly regrouped in the bottom of the sixth and captured the lead 2-1. Back-to-back hits by Brooke Vannoy and Jaylin Baldridge put runners on first and second with one out before St. Pierre hit a fielder's choice to the third baseman and Vannoy slid past the tag to score the second run of the game.
The Cougar Defense held Memphis to just six hits and seven runners left on base.
Freshman RHP Presley Bell (6-8) earned the win for the Cougars. In her seventh complete game of the season, Bell allowed one run on six hits, two walks and struck out a batter.
