HOUSTON - Houston offensive lineman Colton Freeman will move to a student assistant role for the Houston Football program due to effects of injuries suffered throughout his career. The sophomore who started six games at center and five games at guard for Houston last season, will assist Houston offensive line coach Derek Warehime.
"It has long been a dream of mine to play football at the collegiate level, and I was able to accomplish that goal at the University of Houston," Freeman said. "While it was disappointing to know that I'll no longer be able to play the game I love, I am comforted by the fact I'll be able to remain in the locker room, the meeting room and the sidelines with my brothers and our coaches while receiving a world-class education that will prepare me for the next step in my life."
Freeman did not give up a single sack in 737 plays last season, en route to earning a grade of 83 percent on the year. He was third among the Houston offensive linemen with 51 knockdown blocks.
"Colton has played a vital role for our program as a valuable role model and will continue to do so," said Houston head coach Tom Herman. "We will certainly miss Colton's contributions on the field but are glad to know that he will remain an integral part of our program. Our top priority is our student-athletes' well-being, and we will continue to support Colton and his future endeavors."
Houston returns five offensive linemen with starting experience in juniors Marcus Oliver and Josh Thomas and sophomores Mason Denley, Kameron Eloph and Will Noble, a 2015 Freshman All-American. The group also added offensive tackle Na'Ty Rodgers this spring, ranked the No. 4 junior college offensive tackle by ESPN.
