Starting the day on No. 17, Gibbons drained a team-high nine birdies. He posted birdies on each of his first two holes and, after a bogey on No. 2, sank three more birdies on his next five holes.
After a bogey on No. 8, Gibbons recovered with three birdies during his next four holes to move to 6-under-par. Although the endured a double bogey on No 13, the Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, native recovered with his final birdie of the day on No. 14 and closed with two straight pars.
Gibbons posted a 75 in the afternoon session to join five others at 142.
Gibbons was one of four Cougars competing as individuals in this recent addition to the spring schedule. Junior Emmett Oh and redshirt freshman Matt Williams were tied for 46th at 150. Sophomore Alan De Bondt posted a 77 in the First Round but was forced to withdraw in the afternoon round.
Rice's Mitchell Meissner led the way at 8-under-par 136, while Texas State's Chase Ambrose stood in second at 137. Saint Mary's Hunter Rappleye and McNeese State of Martin Eriksson were tied for third at 139.
Saint Mary's held the team lead at 562, while Rice finished the first day in second at 566. McNeese State (569), North Texas (574) and Little Rock (579) rounded out the top-5 leaders.
SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS

Willams is scheduled to tee off No. 16, while Oh and De Bondt will start off No. 15 with Gibbons beginning on No. 14.
UP NEXT
Following the Jim West Intercollegiate, the Cougars return to team competition when they close out the regular season at The Maxwell Intercollegiate on April 16-17 at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
From there, the team enters the postseason when it competes at the American Athletic Conference Championships on May 1-3 on the Quarry Course at Black Diamond Ranch in LeCanto, Fla.
