COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The University of Houston diving team opened competition at the NCAA Zone D Championships Monday, with three Cougars competing in the 1-meter springboard at the Student Recreation and Natatorium on the Texas A&M campus.
The 2016 American Most Outstanding Diver Danielle Shedd barely missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the event. The senior finished eigth, while teammate Micaela Bouter placed 15th in the event. Junior Taylor Olanski finished 27th overall in the field of 56.
Shedd ended the day with a score of 581.10, two spots away from the all-important sixth spot. The Converse, Texas native got preliminaries off on a great start coming off the boards to score a 54.00 on the inward 1 ½ somersault pike to lead all divers through the first round. Her best dive of finals was the forward 2 ½ somersault pike earning her a score of 53.30.
Bouter scored a cumulative total of 535.95 to conclude the first day of zone. Her first dive, the inward 1 ½ somersault pike, was her best dive of finals earning her a score of 49.20.
Junior Olanski had a good performance scoring 253.85 but it wasn't enough to move on to finals.
Tomorrow all three divers are back on the boards in the 3-meter competition beginning at 11 a.m. Bouter currently holds the 3-meter conference title after her impressive showcase on the boards in February. The top-nine finishers will qualify for an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships.
